Xeomin® | The Pure Alternative to Botox®
What is Xeomin®?
Merz pharmaceuticals created Xeomin® to treat mild to severe wrinkles. The product is FDA approved and is commonly known as an alternative to Botox®. However, this does not answer the underlying question of: “What exactly is Xeomin®?”. Xeomin® is a “naked” form of Botox; meaning, Xeomin® contains only filtered ingredients. These ingredients include Botulinum Toxin A. There are no additives within the Xeomin formula, making it less possible for an allergic reaction to occur. Since there are no additives within the formula, Xeomin® does not have to be refrigerated. Botulinum Toxic A is made from the bacteria of botulism. Botulinum blocks nerve activity in the muscles. The reduction of muscle activities enables the skin to wrinkle during a movement.
How is the treatment received?
Many patients find the treatment to have very minimal discomfort and some even find it more tolerable than an injection of Botox®. Before first time patients receive Xeomin®, they typically imagine a long needle for the injection, however, this is a false image. The needle used in the injection process is quite small in size. After the initial injection, patients may feel a slight burning sensation, but should reduce seconds after injecting. The treatment itself takes anywhere between 10 – 20 minutes depending on the area and amount of areas desired for treatment. Upon arriving to your appointment, one of our registered nurses will cleanse the area, and request for you to express different facial movements and inject the needed area(s) with the product. The act of creating those facial movements will help target the wrinkles that are desired for treatment.
After the treatment and results:
Typically, patients envision themselves with instantaneous results after the treatment, which is false. It takes the product anywhere from 2 days to one week to show results. The results will last up to 4-6 months. To prevent unnecessary bruising it is recommended to not take products with aspirin or vitamin E for ten days prior to the procedure. After the initial treatment, the injection site may appear as a mosquito bite for approximately 20 – 60 minutes, followed with some swelling that may last for a few hours. If bruising occurs, the effects will last anywhere between 7-10 days. Application to cover any bruising may be applied immediately after the treatment has been done. To speed up the process after the initial injection, you can make various facial expressions such as: frowning, smiling, squinting, and raising the eyebrows. It is imperative that patients do not lay down for the first two hours after the initial treatment. Laying down can cause the product to spread to other areas, and cause unwanted relaxation of other muscles.
